Scholarship Spotlight: Dana

Hi, my name is Dana and I just turned 19 this summer! I am an incoming freshman at College of Charleston, majoring in Marketing with a minor in Computer Information Systems, and I am beyond excited for this new adventure. I was born in Nicaragua, but I have been living in the U.S for six years now. This summer, I was able to participate in the SPECTRA program at CofC, where I had the opportunity to meet other minority students like myself, take some classes, and learn the best ways to get around campus. As an incoming freshman, this was great to shake off the nerves of starting college!

This school year, I am looking forward to meeting more people of all kinds of backgrounds, and creating new friendships. Another great thing in college that I hope to experience is studying abroad, for I have always loved visiting new places and learning about different cultures. I am also looking forward to having more freedom when it comes to my class schedules, as waking up at seven during my four years in high school was not fun. Finally, I am excited to be able to study in my college’s library, since it has a great calm atmosphere that helps me study the best!

I had the amazing opportunity to become a licensed nail technician during high school, and it is something I enjoy doing for the artistry, as well as for the happiness it brings to some. Although I will start a regular part time job in college, I hope to eventually be able to afford more materials and take clients to put my license and skills to use! In college I am also hoping to become a peer tutor and student mentor later on, so I can be able to help fellow college students. I would also love to have the opportunity to participate in volunteer work, and to get an internship in my field of study!

What I love about marketing is the wide variety and flexibility that it provides when it comes to jobs. Although it might change in the future, after college I would love to work as a director of digital marketing or as a brand marketing manager! I believe jobs like these would allow me to blend my critical thinking skills while also incorporating my creative side, which is something I would love to have in my future profession.
